Sustainable Tourism Green Initiatives...
Earth Hour:
The Strathcona Hotel Downtown Toronto commits to turning off non-essential exterior and interior lights every year on Earth Hour.
From Honest Eds to the CN Tower, Toronto's iconic skyline was dramatically darkened last Earth Hour along with thousands of other businesses and individuals in the city.
The Strathcona Hotel is proud to return as a partner city for Earth Hour, and looks forward to building on last year's tremendous success. With the flip of a switch, we'll once again send a powerful message of concern beyond our city that demonstrates a readiness to address the harmful effects of climate change.
Hotel Association of Canada's Green Key Eco-Rating Program:
The Strathcona Hotel has been awarded "3 Green Keys" by the Hotel Association of Canada's Green Key Eco-Rating Program. According to the HAC, the rating of 3 Green Keys describes "A hotel that has taken significant steps to protect the environment. Strong environmental programs, best management practices, training programs, and engineering solutions have been implemented which have benefited the environment and the local community."
We are committed to the continual improvement of our green initiatives and aim to achieve the highest "5 Green Key" rating within the next 2 years. Click here for more info.
Project Planet:
We have recently launched the Project Planet program. This is an effort to protect the environment through conservation of water and decreased use of detergent. Guests have an option of having linens and towels washed as they feel necessary. Click here to find out more.
Environmentally Friendly Lighting:
We are converting all light bulbs to energy efficient lighting ie Compact Fluorescent Lamps and LED’s. They are smaller, greener and brighter, on average outputting 70+ lumens per watt with beautiful colour rendering, than traditional incandescent bulbs. The Genesis Fusion bulbs are the safest CFL's for the environment, containing only 1mg of mercury and using lead-free solder and glass. We also use motion sensor lights in the back of the house and some public spaces.
100% Non-Smoking:
The entire hotel is now 100% non-smoking.
Other Initiatives:
Carpets are being replaced with hardwood floors in all guest rooms, which results in less dust and bacteria.
Every guestroom has blue recycling bins.
In our two restaurants, the paper coffee cups are made of recycled paper.
The Strathcona Hotel has contracted with the buying house Avendra, who ensures that in the manufacturing process no child labor is involved and that manufactures ensure the highest level of recycling and energy efficient processes.
