Original Mother’s Day gifts can be tricky. You want it to come from the heart, you probably don’t want to spend too much money (especially if you’re doing brunch too), and you want her to love what she gets (and not just say she loves it).

Something to wear is often a default Mother’s Day gift, be it a scarf, broach or perfume. But that  direction can be tough, as that kind of stuff is rather personal.

You could always do something with your mom (experiences are everything), but coming up with something on short notice might be tough.

So putting those two options aside for a moment, here are a few others you can think about:

For the horticulturally-inclined mom

It’s the perfect time of year to start a garden, so plants, herbs or flowers would be perfect. If you can add a nice pot to go along with it, all the better.

For the sweet-toothed mom

Chocolates are also traditional, but those who like chocolate really like it. Go for the high end, or get something from the old country. Dufflet and Nadege have delicious take-home treats and gifts, or a gift certificate will let mom make the selection. Kitten and the Bear sells homemade preserves and scones, so you can give the gift of many at-home afternoon teas. You’ll need to order the scones in advance.

For the culturally involved mom

The ROM, the AGO and the Textile Museum of Canada all have really great gift shops. And the Toronto Comic Arts Festival has hundreds of comics artists, all with amazing wares to sell.

For the creative mom

For mothers who are curious about such things, MOCA is offering a nature drawing and journaling workshop. The $45 fee includes an art materials kit with a journal and graphite pencils.

And for the mom who just wants to spend time with her kids

Nothing beats a stroll through the city on a gorgeous spring day. Pick her up a Swell water bottle (which she’ll actually use) and enjoy!

For the mom that needs a break
